Project Details:

After the devastating 2011 earthquakes, Christchurch suffered such extensive damage that the city is still recovering today. The suburb of New Brighton was one of the hardest hit and the economy suffered greatly. As part of a regeneration project for the area, this grass-roots community project was aimed at bringing more people together into the commercial core, indirectly supporting local businesses, and reigniting the deflated commercial area.

How Did We Help:

As Lead Designer and Project Manager, Select Contract used our tried and tested turnkey approach to bring the entire project to life.

The Brief:

After the successful completion of the first phase of the New Brighton Foreshore Development, Select Contracts was engaged to perform the Schematic, Detailed Design and construction management of a beachfront hot pool facility.

Our Approach:

To inform the conceptual design process, Select Contracts conducted an analysis of the regional market for similar hot pool facilities and developed a range of design options that would appeal to different demographics within the community. We also developed an estimated visitor penetration for the facility that would inform design decisions and made recommendations for add-ons that would increase the commercial viability of the project.

Throughout the Detailed Design and Construction Management process we worked with a wide range of partners and consultants to produce an incredible facility that was carefully designed in its relationship with the surrounding area and to best meet the needs of the community.

The Result:

The facility has five outdoor pools ranging from 26ºC to 40ºC including a lap pool, hot pools, family pools, and a cold plunge pool. This project marks the completion of the second phase of the New Brighton foreshore development. The first phase was the uniquely envisioned New Brighton Playground and Splash Park, designed and delivered by Select Contracts in 2018.

Since opening, the hot pools have seen exceptional results and usage both by local residents and tourists. The attraction is truly a catalyst for activity in New Brighton and is operating in a financially sustainable way even with council rates for residents. We attribute this to the fact that the design and construction was completed in a way that created a compelling user experience without the build budget of a private spa.
