As part of a regeneration project for the area, this grass-roots community project aimed to bring more people together into the commercial core, indirectly supporting local businesses, and reigniting the deflated commercial area. The first stage of the project was to create the New Brighton Playground and Splash Park, and then the He Puna Taimoana, Christchurch Hot Pools.

The Brief:
Following the completion of a Market Demand Study, Select Contracts were further engaged to perform the Landscape Planning, Concept, Schematic and Detailed Design, and Construction Management to bring Phase One of the New Brighton Foreshore Development project to life.
Our Approach:
This project began with the creation of a detailed foreshore development strategy that considered the relationship between the existing commercial core and new elements, how the introduction of new facilities would impact the future growth of the commercial core and how the development would integrate with other foreshore works already underway.
Following this was an extensive site analysis and design process to ensure that the playground was suitably placed in relation to the Surf Life Saving Club, foreshore protection zones, accessible beach access points and the future hot pools development.
Further community engagement was sought during the conceptual design phase to ensure that the design would best meet the needs of the community while taking into consideration culturally significant elements that were present on the existing site.
The Result:
Select Contracts completed the Conceptual Design, Schematic Design, Detailed Design and Construction Management for this project and in 2018, delivered the Playground and Splash Pad to an excited community. It received hundreds of visitors on opening day and was a grand event for the community. It has been a well-utilized community asset ever since. Select Contracts is proud to have helped deliver this regeneration project to the community of New Brighton in Christchurch, New Zealand.
